Accurate metering is crucial for good water management. As part of the Murrumbidgee Metering Project, many of the system’s water users (regulated) will receive a new telemetry enabled meter as part of the upgrades to water infrastructure and operations. It is intended that the complete package will make the Murrumbidgee one of the best managed rivers, with the most advanced technology, in the world.

State Water’s upgrade of meters on the Murrumbidgee River system means many irrigators will receive new, fully compliant meters without having to cover the cost of the device or its installation. These costs will be funded by Water for Rivers.

Under new standards for non-urban water meters, all non-conforming meters will be replaced with complying devices by 30 June 2016.

Water meters installed after the NWI’s new standards must be pattern approved, verified in the factory and installed in accordance with the pattern approval certificate. Installation will need to comply with the new Australian Standard (AS4747).

The new telemetry meters will provide real time, accurate measurement and reporting usage. Better water management helps to secure water for the benefit of all river system users.

In addition to the Murrumbidgee Metering Project, State Water is also undertaking the Murray Pilot Metering Project, which aims to improve measurement of water extracted from groundwater, regulated and unregulated rivers by installing high accuracy meters.

Project Benefits

  • New telemetry enabled meters will provide real time, accurate measurement and reporting
  • A new, fully compliant meter at no cost to the landowner, for both the device and the installation
  • Lower maintainance requirements for new meters, all meters will remain the property of State Water, who will be responsible for the maintainance
  • Better management and security of water irrigators, communities and the environment
  • Potential water savings through better management of water-decreasing losses through unauthorised extraction and inaccurate metering
